Ayurveda

Widely regarded as the oldest form of health care in world, Ayurveda is an intricate medical system that originated in India thousands of years ago. The fundamentals of Ayurveda can be found in Hindu scripture called the Vedas-the ancient books of wisdom. The Rig Veda, which was written over 6000 years ago, contains a series of prescription that can help humans overcome various ailments. Ayurveda can be defined as a system which uses the inherent principles of nature, to help maintain a person by keeping the individual's body, mind &spirit in perfect equilibrium with nature.

Meaning
Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term , made up of the words «Ayus» and «Veda».«Ayus means life and «Veda» means knowledge OR science. The term Ayurveda thus means «the science of life» or «the knowledge of life». According to the ancient ayurvedic scholar Charaka, «ayus» comprises the mind, body, senses and the soul.

The art & science of living:
Ayurveda, translated as the art & science of living is a systematic approach which utilizes all that nature provides(Foods , spices , herbal medicines , colours metals, gems, sounds )to not only overcome illness but continually strengthen oneself . Ayurveda evolved in an ancient culture which understood the human condition to be limitless, the day to day implimentation of ayurvedic principles creates a strong body , clarity of mind,& tranquility of spirit so the indivisual may move closer to realizing his/her true potential.

Genesis & Development:
Ayurveda , the oldest system of medicine in the world, traces its roots to the vadic period in ancient India(1500B. C). The RIG VEDA , a compilation of verse on the nature of existence, is the oldest surviving book of any Indo-European language(1500 B. C)this book is based on the nature of health & desease , pathogenesis & principles of treatment.

The atreya Samhita is the oldest medical book in the world; it survives from Takashila University which was operating as early as 800 B. C. The Atharva Veda (800 B. C)lists the eight divisions of Ayurveda: Internal Medicine, Surgery of head & neck, ophthalmology & otorinolaryngology, surgery. toxicology, psychiatry, paediatrics, gerontology or science of rejuvenation,& the science of fertility. In 100 A. D; the physician Charaka revised & supplemented the Atreya Samhita;the Charak samhita is a major work on internal medicine.

Objectives of Ayurveda
The aim of this system is to prevent illness., heal the sick and preserve life. This can be summedup as follows:
• To protect health and prolong life.
• To eliminate diseases and disfunctions of the body. Principles:
Ayurveda is based on the premise that the universe is made up of five elements:- air, fire , water earth and ether. These elements are presented in humans by three energies or forces(doshas). When any of the doshas accumulate in the body beond the desirable limit, the body looses its balance. Ayurveda suggests specific lifestyle and nutritional guidelines to help individuals reduce the exess doshas. It views the person as a composit of these three forces(doshas):
  • Vata , the force symbolized by Air
  • Pitta , The force symbolized by Fire
  • Kapha , Yhe force symbolized by Water
The quality and relative balance of these forces determines health and disease. when these forces (doshas) act harmoniously, the functions of digestion, absorption & elimination(physical and mental)create health. As these forces are responsible for specific areas of body/ mond function, the symptom of imbalance indicate which of these force is deficient or excessive.

Ayurvedic definition of health:
In Ayurvedic Medicine, health is defined as soundness of body(shrira)mind(manas)and self(atman). Each of these must be nurtured if the individual
Is to create health. Ayurveda offers a holictic approach based upon the understanding that no single agent by itself couses disease or brings health.

But the Vedic view is that the human condition is limitless : we have a deep desire to realize unity with nature & divinity with ourselves. AYURVEDA IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT NATURE IN HER GENEROSITY PROVIDE S.

Law of Nature and spirituality:
In essence, ayurveda explains the laws of nature that cause health or desease. The main factors that cause poor health ( also described as imbalance are:
  1. poor digestion
  2. weak immune system
When food is not properly digested , it stays in the body. Nutrients are not absorbed and the food decays and forms toxins. these toxins caused most disease in the body. Therefore it is important to have good digestion.

The immune system can become depleted by poor nutrition , over work , drugs and other factors. The finest essence of nutrition develops a life saps that protects the immune system
naturally.
